There are many possible explanations for the meaning of ẹ̀gi, the root word of this name. The following suggestions have been made: Ẹ̀gin (Oǹdó) Ègun (Ìdànrè) Ẹ̀ki (Ilẹ̀-Olújìí) All these being cognate terms for "older sibling/elder," and synonymous with ẹ̀gbọ́n. There's also the suggestion that it could mean "coral beads", a root from where the name Ṣẹ̀gi was formed, as a stand-in for "royalty". More verifications needed.
